Ah yes, the old 'tech-help/customer interface', a much ignored component in the communications chain.

Being an ex-A/N+ trainer meself I used to come across this sort of thing often. How is a techie 'supposed' to talk to non-tech savvy people? It seems like an ideal topic for 'a course'; use of language, analogy, myth-busting and common sense restoration techniques. I'm sure there is scope for such a course, a one day 'how to get technical concepts across to non-technical staff' deal. I'm convinced such training would lead to fewer incidents of misunderstanding and fewer, and shorter, support call conversations, which would surely lead to increased caller satisfaction and fewer repeat calls, there for improving efficiency and costs.

Might take a bit of selling though!

Excellent article, very useful list of top tips! I particularly like the idea of ditching the slides (or booklets or handouts) and not lecturing. I would also add: 'Be nice to everyone you meet at the company you are pitching to.' When I was the buyer of training at an organisation, a trainer came to see us and (because I was a young woman) assumed I was the secretary and barely spoke to me until my colleague (who was my junior, but happened to be an older man) joined us. He then proceeded to address my colleague throughout the whole presentation. Needless to say, he did not get the business...

Thanks Andy.

I train for a living, meet thousands of new faces a year, and I still get a bit of stage fright before courses. It's great. The day it goes away is the day I need to stop.

We love the 6Ps. :)
